What should we keep of the new normal?

People waiting in line with social distancing
We got together virtually and talked about how we are experiencing the pandemic, what are our fears and our hopes.
We’re sad that some people have died, suffered, and that a lot more will. We’re worried for that risk which is all around us, and might take away some of the people we love, and ourselves too, naturally.
We wonder what ways, or rites, we can come up to to express that sadness, to mourn as a community, now (virtually) and when the pandemic is over (a ceremony in cemeteries, other ideas?).

                                                                     * * * * * * *

Our world will be changed, it will never be the same, and we are trying to think of ways to veer it in a direction we value: more wholesome, just, zen. Less consumerism? Less production? Less pollution?
Some of the things that are happening are good, some are bad. Below is a list. We want to have our voices heard about how this pandemic is handled: social action. Two proposals, one physical: we stand at our windows with posters expressing our views: lives over dollars, save small businesses, help to illegal immigrants, suspend rents, suspend mortgages, etc.

Virtually, we could have a day of action where we all express on the internet (instagram, fb, twitter) our political views through photos, memes, statements.

  1. What should we do/ Boycott, google, amazon and facebook. I have, time to take them down. They have all already jumped in bed with the NSA and CIA in our surveillance society.

I I use duck, made 1 order in my life from amazon and they screwed that up and do not have a facebook account and never did.

Even add Apple to that list. They are all along with Silicone Valley, right in bed with the NSA, DIA and CIA for just three secret unaccountable govt. agencies spying on Americans and committing crimes. Even the FISA courts are secret with no accountability.

The deep state and shadow govt. exist and not even trump, especially trump, can do anything about them. We have to at least cut off the capitalist from serving their interest over ours.

Short for Duckduckgo, a search engine that's not tracked. That is unless the vast US surveillance network hasn't threatened them yet.

  2. Dig up a lawn and plant food. If you don't have a lawn, find someone who will let you dig up theirs. Become less dependent on them and they will have less power over you.

The commute is defo something to lose -- sick of shouldering this cost for my bosses

However, really, I hope this crisis leads to a deep societal reflection on the nature of our boss-employee relationships and that many of our old assumptions about work are lost completely.

Harriet Fraad was saying on Economic Update today that the world population at the moment is like a child in an abusive household --- with a told-truth that changes day to day and narcissistic authority figures (that we are nevertheless drawn to in a time of uncertainty). I worry we won't shake this off, ultimately; nevertheless the 'flow' of something has broken... and I hope the pause for thought is of some use.

I've been toying with the idea of teacher co-op for a year or so and am thinking about drafting an email to tell my current employers to fuck off ha ha -- I can't go back to my old routine and feel confident in my own sanity at the same time.

  4. I don't know man, despite being sick with COVID-19 for over 30 days, I have been denied all unemployment (uber driver), despite my doctor saying do not return to work until the 7th, despite a stay at home order. I have been billed, but not helped at all.

Happy #Rentstrike, it is time to Strike Capitalism.

  5. Many of us are using Zoom who claims access to small details, such as physical address, credit card information (yes, it's in the small print!!). These people in Resistance offer alternatives: https://mayfirst.coop/en/post/2020/content-alternatives-live-meetings/
